When people talk about healthcare, most folks forget to include a very important part of their body: the mouth. There is a link between dental health and disease that seems to go unnoticed in this country. Every cell in our body, what we are made of, our bones, our tissue, our organs, and our blood, are a direct result of what we put in our body. We don’t just accidentally produce new cells each day out of thin air, and when we get a cut and lose some blood, we don’t just magically get new blood. Everytime our body rejunvinates or creates something new, it can only do it with the raw material that we put in our mouth, and that mouth is filled with crushing, biting, chewing, and mashing devices known as teeth.
All things considered, for most people, the mouth is an after thought when it comes to healthcare, and yet if you taped your mouth shut and put up a work sign that said “closed for the winter”, you would die. So in that context, it really is amazing how many people allow their mouth to decay, rot, and be ignored for years and years. Only when some enormous shooting, stabbing pain begins to develop, do some people then visit a dentist and ask for some help. Obviously, maintanence on a yearly basis could prevent this scenario yet many people fail to visit the dentist or even worry about dental insurance until they actually need it.
